Mission Hills Makeover
The little things – and the big things – absolutely matter when it comes to creating a highly functional and aesthetically pleasing outdoor living space.
The hardscape professionals at Heinen created the perfect outdoor living space for the restauranteur-homeowners of this beautiful Mission Hills home. The key to Heinen’s success was their thorough attention to detail and commitment to meeting all of the homeowners’ desires for their multi-purpose patio. They needed a space that would be pet-friendly, provide the couple privacy and shade when dining al fresco together, and be able to expand to seat up to a dozen for larger dinner parties.
Once the Heinen team nailed down a plan, they went right to work – completing the demolition of an older patio, preservation of multiple existing plantings, installation of new plantings, an all-new patio surface, seat-walls, built-in flower planters, and a custom lighting system. Altogether, the finished space had become a haven for the homeowners, who greatly appreciated every little detail of their impressive new patio.
Westwood Hills Modern

The homeowners’ objective for this large-scale project was twofold: to have a place where they could easily entertain a large group of friends and family and, to have a more intimate space where the couple could enjoy their own version of the great outdoors space alone together during relaxing evenings at home. They, of course, also wanted the space to reflect and complement the style and aesthetic of their one-of-a-kind home – so they called the professionals at Heinen for help.
After consulting with the homeowners, the hardscaping experts went to work carefully carving out a two-tier terrace design. This was the perfect way to take full advantage of their long, narrow backyard space to create a succession of entertainment spaces – starting with the upper patio, where large dinner parties could easily be accommodated, and the lower patio, where they created a cozy conversation pit.
Along with the construction of these multi-purpose entertaining spaces, the Heinen team added a custom-built fire feature, a seat wall with recessed lighting, an array of natural plantings, a stepping-stone walkway, a stone stairway between patios, and elegant evening lighting fixtures. Now completed, the backyard flawlessly matches the contemporary home and is the perfect place to catch an evening sunset by the fire.
