Heinen 2023 Recap – More great projects for more great clients!
From new patios to full landscape overhauls, Heinen’s outdoor living specialists had a busy 2023 designing and installing just the right custom solutions – perfectly suited to each client’s specific needs. Although every project is a little different, Heinen’s 35+ years in the outdoor living business has well prepared the team for most any design challenge imaginable. And, thanks to our incredible customers, Heinen Landscape and Irrigation has become the KC metro area’s go-to team for all things landscaped, hard-scaped, or irrigated – or even a combination of all three! With 2023 winding down, it seems appropriate to take a closer look at a few of our most memorable projects this past year.
Shawnee Outdoor Entertainment Area
This Shawnee backyard makeover featured a variety of elements coming together to create a perfect year-round entertainment area. The Heinen crew installed a brand-new curved patio with stone seat walls, a custom fire feature, and a built-in grill station. The hardscape elements utilized premium manufactured stone from Techo-Bloc, whose broad line of modern stone slabs, bricks, and pavers (available in a wide variety of colors and textures), made it easy to mix and match elements to achieve a look and feel that is just right for the new outdoor space.
In addition to the new patio area, Heinen upgraded the home’s landscaping. Accent shrubs were added to frame the patio and taller evergreen varieties were planted along the fence line to disguise the fence and provide a natural backdrop to newly installed raised garden beds. The final element: a river rock and flagstone path connecting the front and back yards. Not only is the path visually eye-catching, but it would also prevent future erosion from rainwater and heavy foot traffic.
Large-Scale Landscaping
Designing and planting large areas of landscaping is no easy task. The team livened up this large grassy expanse with a new landscaping bed stretching end to end and filled with a vibrant variety of plantings among large boulders. As the plantings grow in, the variations in height, texture, and shape will add even more visual interest to the home’s green space.
This landscaping renovation is actually just a piece of a much larger project that is currently in the works! These beautiful new landscaping beds are the captivating perimeter for this large property that will soon hold more stunning outdoor areas as the project unfolds! Stay tuned!
Landscaping a Prairie Village New Build
This recently constructed Prairie Village home was beautiful but in desperate need of equally beautiful landscaping. Starting with a bare-dirt pallet allowed the crew to address possible drainage issues by regrading and building a natural stone retaining wall for effective rainwater egress and to prevent future erosion.
This was also a great time to install a high-efficiency irrigation system, with watering zones segmented for various types of plant beds, shrubs, trees, and a new lawn. Once the irrigation system was installed, the Heinen landscape team went to work transforming the bare dirt yard into a lush green oasis – complete with contemporary landscape beds containing a blend of ground cover, leafy shrubs, boulders, and accent trees.
The crew’s work continued into the backyard, where the once blank canvas was transformed with more contemporary plantings in thoughtly placed curving landscape beds. Now the stunning home has an equally striking outdoor entertainment space that will be enjoyed all year long.
Terraced Backyard Landscaping
The steep backyard of this newly-built Olathe home rendered the backside of the property almost unusable. A steep slope leading down to a neighborhood stormwater channel left little useable space for planting – and was effectively an erosion problem waiting to happen. The Heinen team worked with the homeowners to create a plan to reclaim the backyard through the installation of a series of terraced landscaping beds with reinforced retaining walls.
Colorful perennials and shrubs were installed along the terraces for beauty and to help prevent erosion. Paver stepping stones were laid to add visual interest and to create a walking path down through the winding terraces for the homeowners and their furry pet companions.
From the home’s two elevated backyard decks the homeowners now enjoy the view of a beautiful new backyard. The new retaining walls boost the aesthetics while also slowing and directing the flow of rainwater, preventing future erosion issues.
